Magnet programs grew out of a CA Supreme Court order in 1976 that requires LAUSD to take steps to “alleviate the harms of racial isolation” and to comply with a desegregation plan to draw minority students from underserved communities. Transportation is provided to students in the magnet programs. Over the years magnet programs have offered non-traditional education options to parents and students across the district.
This writer having had three children participate in Gifted & Talented Education (GATE) classes and programs truly understands the significance of such specialized services. All children deserve to have an appropriate education that will challenge them, and offers them adequate room for growth. Superintendent Deasy recently made a statement saying ‘There’s a reason these schools are called the jewels of the district, it’s because they are.” And school board member Steve Zimmer is currently working on a resolution to increase the number of gifted-magnet seats and more equitably distribute them across the entire district.
