Because of the recent death of Pop and icon Whitney Houston on Saturday, several times during the morning people prayed for her family and friends during alter call, and during the delivery of the morning messages. Rev. Sharpton said that he was visiting with friends on Saturday when he heard of the news about Whitney Houston. Sharpton said during his morning sermon that Houston will be missed by millions of people but that she will be remembered by her spirit, and talented one of a kind voice. And he reminded us that much will come out of the news outlets, in the coming days and weeks focusing on Houston’s shortcomings. However he said that the only difference between her and us is that her shortcomings are viewed on a world stage and ours are viewed on a smaller scale.
Sharpton’s message came from the book of Psalms 37: 1-4. He said that it was a favorite bible verse of the late James Brown who he was very close to. The passage speaks about when you stand up for something there will be those who want to push you back. But when you trust in the Lord, God will turn them around. The Rev. also said that as he travels folks often say they want to go with him and help him with his battles. But he said that some people haven’t gone through enough “stuff yet” to be able to hang with him. He said he needs somebody that’s been knocked down, talked about, and had some dirt on them – but was able to get back up and keep charging. Of course Sharpton said this in a way that caused a laugh from the worshippers.
