Each workshop participant was given a sheet of paper to take notes, a pen, and a 76 page booklet titled LifePrep Academy, a planning guide for CA. students and their families, that focuses on college, career and life planning. The 3 hour workshop included personal stories about family and friends and how their decisions and experiences inspired Moore to start researching ways to provide quality resources to families seeking help with college and/or career planning.
Representatives of Cal State L.A. and Wells Fargo Bank spoke of college admission requirements, and financial planning respectively – but much of the workshop time was spent with Moore going through the many (hundreds) websites featured on the http://www.educate-ca.org/website. It is I believe the most comprehensive website of resources for students, parents, and their families. Sites like owl.english.purdue.edu, a free online writing resource that teaches writing, www.edheads.org/, provides free math and science games, plus helps students to think critically. This site even shows virtual surgeries being conducted, www.bigfuture.org, one of my favorites for families with students interested in planning for college/career, www.cia.gov, yes the CIA has facts on almost every country in the world – when you get to their home page click on World Facts, www.soundjunction.org, if music is your thing this is your site, kids love this site, www.readprint.com , a site of classic books, www.mathcats.com, a fun, colorful site with endless resources of math help for all ages, http://americanhistory.si.edu/, if you’re interested in learning anything about American History…..then this is your site.
The above resources are just a sample of the many websites that you will find on the http://www.educate-ca.org/ main site, where you can find information regarding Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), teacher lesson plans, parent resources, homework help, A-G college requirements, college majors, and so much more. Awesome resource!
