Black Americans are embedded in the fabric of this democracy. And as a writer, I can take action through my words to encourage EVERYONE in this Country to utilize the most basic and effective tool you have to promote fairness and balance in how our Country operates. And that tool is your Vote! You see when more people participate in our democracy through voting, we have more people involved in how and who influences our lives.
For example, let’s look at how our judges in this Country are selected. Judges are voted in by citizens, or appointed by Governor’s or President’s (with Senate confirmation). And during this Presidential election year, how many of us know much about the judges listed in our election booklets/ballots? I’m confident that the answer is most of us don’t have a clue about those candidates. Why is that?
Considering that judges have a huge impact on how your local, state, and federal laws are interpreted, every citizen should have knowledge about them so that they can make an informed decision on who should represent their best interests? Some cities and locales have candidate forums, where local judges can answer questions to why they seek the position, and how they would improve conditions for its citizens. Seek out organizations that sponsor such forums in your area, and if no such event occurs in your area, advocate for creating one.
So on this last day of Black History Month, I encourage you to use your biggest tool for fairness, and accountability in your local, state, and federal government, and that is your right to participate in the precious act of Voting, do it for yourself, your family/ancestors, and your Country, Vote!
