It doesn’t matter if you’re a school teacher, engineer, mechanic, entrepreneur, etc., if you decide that voting is a waste of time and people are going to do whatever they want anyway…then you’re right your choice to not participate in the one right that gives each citizen an opportunity to voice who they want their leaders to be, and what policies are important, then leaders will continue to do whatever they want.
But whether you are rich; poor, or in the middle, you have the same one vote as anyone else, and you alone have an awesome opportunity each election to make a better life and world for yourself and others. A quote by Les Brown is: “We all have the ability to create a better world, this is no time to be silent..”
Some states are passing laws that make it harder for Americans to vote. Senator Raphael Warnock said that “some people don’t want some people to vote.” How un-American is that? Senator Angus King said that Senator Joe Manchin wants to keep the filibuster because he believes in it’s “practice and history.” However, the current Senate is not using it like it was intended in practice and history so it must be changed.
For those of you who don’t know much about the Senators mentioned above; no problem, just know that a democracy depends on all eligible members of a society being allowed to vote, without suppression!
So, are you going to be silent in 2022 and let a small percentage of rich and powerful people dictate your life, or are you going to use the power of your vote and combine it with others like you (the majority) to grab and hold on to your collective power? It really is as simple as that – but most important you must act now. Our next big opportunity is in the mid-term November election; organize your friends, neighbors, (even out of state people), call your local/state representatives and tell them to protect your voting rights, educate yourself, empower yourself, and vote.
Along your journey to pursuing your happiness, take time to protect your democracy by taking your civic engagement seriously, otherwise your pursuit to happiness will not be realized in its fullness…I agree this is no time to be silent!
